A large enclosure for a large gecko
Leachianus geckos are the largest living gecko species and need a tall, spacious enclosure — a minimum 24"x24"x48" front-opening terrarium for a single adult. They are heavy-bodied climbers and need sturdy, thick branches and large cork tubes that can support their bulk.
Unlike smaller arboreal geckos, Leachianus will overwhelm thin vines and flimsy decor. Build the enclosure around thick hardwood branches and wide cork, and provide plenty of vertical hiding spots.
Temperature, humidity and UVB
Leachianus geckos do well at room temperature — aim for 72–78°F with a warm spot no higher than 82°F. A ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat is useful only if your room drops below 70°F.
Keep humidity between 50–70%, misting in the evening and letting the enclosure dry out during the day. Low-level arboreal UVB like the Arcadia ShadeDweller 2.4% supports natural D3 synthesis and a healthy day/night cycle.
Diet and feeding
A complete powdered gecko diet (CGD) such as Pangea or Repashy is the foundation — offer it fresh every 24–48 hours on a sturdy magnetic feeding ledge. Leachianus have big appetites and eat more than smaller geckos.
Once or twice a week, offer gut-loaded feeder insects dusted with calcium. Large roaches and hornworms are appropriate for their strong jaws.
Handling and temperament
Leachianus geckos are known for their unique personalities — some are calm and docile, others can be vocal and defensive. They are a hands-off display species for many keepers, and handling should be minimal and gentle.
Support their whole body, move slowly, and never grab. With patience, some individuals become tolerant of brief, supported handling, but they are best enjoyed as an impressive display animal.
