Every heat source needs one
Heat mats, ceramic emitters and radiant panels all drift and can overheat. A thermostat is not an accessory — it is the safety device that stands between a working setup and a burned animal.
Budget for one thermostat per heat source. At $35–$60, it is the cheapest insurance in the hobby.
On/off vs dimming vs pulse
On/off thermostats like the Inkbird ITC-306T are perfect for heat mats and ceramic emitters. Dimming (proportional) thermostats are the better match for basking bulbs, smoothing temperature swings instead of flickering the bulb.
The Inkbird's WiFi app alerts are genuinely useful — you get a phone notification if the enclosure ever leaves its safe range.
Placement and verification
Put the probe where the animal actually sits: directly above the heat mat or at the basking surface. Then verify with an independent thermometer — trust, but verify, applies doubly to gecko heat.
