A terrestrial enclosure with a gradient
African fat-tailed geckos are ground-dwelling insectivores from West Africa. A single adult thrives in a 36–40 gallon front-opening terrarium with a warm side, a cool side, and three hides — warm, cool, and humid.
Front-opening access matters: reaching in from above mimics a predator and stresses terrestrial geckos. A deep substrate tray supports natural burrowing behavior.
Heating, humidity and substrate
Provide belly heat via an under-tank heater on a thermostat, targeting 88–90°F on the warm floor and 75–80°F on the cool side. A humid hide filled with damp sphagnum moss aids shedding.
Humidity should be moderate (40–60%) — higher than a leopard gecko but still dry. Reptile carpet, slate tile, or a paper-towel substrate works well for beginners; experienced keepers can use compacted clay or stone-desert mixes.
Diet and supplements
Feed gut-loaded insects — dubia roaches, mealworms, and crickets — sized no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes. Offer food in the evening when they are active.
Dust every feeding with phosphorus-free calcium, and rotate in a multivitamin once or twice a week. A small dish of plain calcium in the enclosure lets them self-regulate.
Handling and behavior
African fat-tailed geckos are docile, slow-moving, and generally tolerate handling well — often calmer than leopard geckos. Support the whole body and let them walk hand-to-hand.
They are nocturnal and may be shy during the day. Provide secure hides and a consistent day/night light cycle to keep them stress-free.
